Memorial Day holiday weekend

LANSING, MI--   The Michigan Department of Transportation is lifting most traffic restrictions to make Memorial Day travel easier.

Officials say lane restrictions on almost 73 percent of road and bridge projects will be removed to mitigate delays.

AAA Michigan estimates more than 1.3 million state residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home over the holiday weekend. That’s a nearly 5-percent increase over last year and the most in more than a decade.

DEARBORN, MI (AP)--   AAA says nearly 1.3 million people from Michigan are expected to travel during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The auto club announced Monday that the projection is a nearly 5-percent increase from last year's travel for the holiday and the most in more than a decade. AAA says the increase is expected despite higher gas prices as strength is seen in the economy.

LANSING, MI--   Michigan State Police say more people died in crashes over the Memorial Day holiday period this year than last.

Preliminary reports indicate eight people lost their lives in eight separate crashes over the extended weekend. Last year six people died in five different accidents.

Troopers say of the eight crashes, seat belts were not used in four; alcohol was a known factor in one; one victim was a bicyclist; and two involved motorcycles. A helmet was not worn in one and it’s unknown if a helmet was worn in the other.
