EWEN, MI--   The bridge over the South Branch of the Ontonagon River near Ewen is reopen.

The Department of Natural Resources closed the former railroad bridge in May to perform rehabilitation work. The $803,000 project included removal of the old bridge deck and wooden approach abutments. The new bridge deck is constructed of pressure-treated, glue-laminated beams, deck, and railing.

The bridge provides access for snowmobile, off-road vehicle, and non-motorized traffic on the Bergland to Sidnaw Rail Grade.

BRUCE CROSSING, MI--   A Ewen man has been arrested for damaging vehicles outside an Ontonagon County bar. 

The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened Tuesday around 11:15 p.m. outside of Twilly’s Bar in Bruce Crossing.  The 24-year-old suspect was arrested for malicious destruction of property after witnesses saw him damage two vehicles parked outside of the bar.

The man’s name has not yet been released, pending his arraignment.

MCMILLAN TOWNSHIP, MI--   Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in a fatal snowmobile accident in Ontonagon County.  

Troopers from the Wakefield and Calumet posts were called Thursday at 11:56 p.m. to Trail #8 in McMillan Township east of Ewen. 

They say Brandon Louis Laubenthal, 31, of Bancroft, Iowa was westbound when his machine left the northern side of a trail and hit a tree. 

Laubenthal was taken to Aspirus Grandview Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

The accident remains under investigation. 

EWEN, MI--   Two Ontonagon County men have been arrested for shooting at a Ewen house with a shotgun.  

Troopers from the Wakefield Post say the homeowner was awakened by the sound of pellets on his house and mailbox between 12:30 and 1 a.m. on January 8.  Evidence was collected at the scene.

Three days later another trooper made a traffic stop and observed what appeared to be evidence matching that at the Ewen house in the vehicle.

EWEN, MI--   An Indiana man has been killed in an Ontonagon County snowmobile accident. 

State Police from the Wakefield Post say the crash happened Monday on Trail #8 east of Ewen.  They say Chad Kiefer, 38, of Lafayette failed to negotiate a curve.  The snowmobile left the trail, hit M-28, traveled across the highway, and continued. 

Officials say speed and alcohol are considered to be factors in the accident. 

ONTONAGON, MI--   A Ewen man charged with home invasion has pleaded guilty in the case. 

Clint Paulick, 21, is accused of breaking into a Ewen home in October, holding the owner at gunpoint, and demanding money.  He left the house when the homeowner said he had no money to give.

Paulick pleaded guilty Thursday to attempted armed robbery, larceny of a firearm, and felonious assault.

Sentencing is set for February 27. 

ONTONAGON, MI--   An Ontonagon County man has been charged with breaking into a Ewen home. 

Sheriff’s deputies say Clint Paulick, 20, of Ewen is charged with first-degree home invasion, attempted armed robbery, larceny of a firearm, and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Paulick allegedly entered a Ewen residence Tuesday around 4 p.m., held the homeowner at gunpoint, and demanded money.  He left after failing to get any.

Troopers from the Wakefield Post were able to find Paulick and arrest him without incident. 

EWEN, MI--   An Ontonagon County man has been arrested for armed robbery.  

Troopers from the Wakefield Post were dispatched Tuesday around 4 p.m. to a residence in Ewen.  The homeowner said a male suspect entered the house, held the owner at gunpoint, and demanded money.  The subject was unable to get any money and left.

The suspect was identified as a 20-year-old Ewen man.  Troopers were able to locate him and took him into custody without incident.
