MACKINAW CITY, MI (AP)-- A decommissioned U.S. Coast Guard cutter that served the Great Lakes and the nation during World War II is raising money for a stem-to-stern renovation.
A crowdfunded campaign has been created for the Icebreaker Mackinaw, which was commissioned in 1944 and served 62 years. The nonprofit Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum seeks funds to sandblast, prime and paint all exterior surfaces and make other significant repairs.
The goal of the GoFundMe campaign is $75,000, but backers say the entire project will need $365,000. They seek multiple sources of money.
The Mackinaw was built to meet demands for increased war materials production.
The vessel broke ice to boost the movement of ore, limestone and coal.
The vessel is located in Mackinaw City, Michigan, and is open for tours and other events.
