Woman rolls car in Powell Township

POWELL TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Marquette woman was taken to UP Health System Marquette following a rollover crash in Powell Township.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened Wednesday around 11:08 a.m. on County Road 550 near the Halfway Location.  A vehicle driven by Amanda Ruonaavara, 31, was southbound when she lost control on the partially slushy road.  The vehicle slid off the right side of the roadway, rolled, and hit a large utility pole, cracking it in half.  The vehicle then rolled onto its roof.

Two witnesses in a northbound vehicle stopped, called 911, and helped Ruonaavara out of her vehicle.  She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Ruonaavara was cited for driving too fast for conditions, having an expired license and driving on a suspended license.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Powell Township Fire and EMS.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
