Woman charged with murder in death of Gladstone child

GLADSTONE, MI--   A Gladstone woman is jailed in connection with the death of her 15-month-old daughter.

Saturday around 5:50 p.m. officers from Gladstone Public Safety were called to Thorntree Apartments for an unresponsive child. Officers performed CPR and took the baby to St. Francis Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Following an investigation by police and the Department of Health and Human Services, Michaela Maupin, 29, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Delta County Prosecutor Philip Strom says the child drowned after she was allegedly left unsupervised in a tub with running water for an unreasonable amount of time.

Maupin’s other minor children were removed from the apartment. A petition was filed in Delta County Probate Court requesting the court take jurisdiction over the children.

Maupin remains lodged on a $1 million cash bond.

A probable cause conference is set for October 19.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
