Wisconsin Gov. Walker cancels speech at Michigan event

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI (AP)--   Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has canceled an appearance this weekend at a Republican gathering in Michigan.

Campaign spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski says the GOP presidential hopeful will not attend the 31st Biennial Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference. He had been scheduled to speak Friday night. Walker also has canceled an appearance in California.

He instead will campaign in the critical early voting states of Iowa and South Carolina. Walker has struggled recently in Iowa, the state that kicks off the nominating race next year, where he had been considered a front-runner.

Other presidential candidates who remain on the Mackinac conference agenda are Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina. The three-day conference starts Friday.
