Walks for suicide prevention being held Saturday

MARQUETTE, MI--   Individuals and teams are bringing attention to suicide prevention in Marquette and Baraga Counties this Saturday.

The Marquette County Suicide Prevention Alliance is holding its annual “Out of the Darkness Community Walk” at the Al Quaal Recreation Area. A second walk is being held at L’Anse Waterfront Park in L’Anse.  The fundraising walks support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s local and national education and advocacy programs.

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States.  Marquette County Health Department Health Educator Sarah Derwin says it touches one in five American families, yet it is preventable.

Last year the walk helped raise more than $7,000 and had more than 100 participants.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the walks at 10. For more information go to www.afsp.donordrive.com.
