UPPCO files request to retain meter-reading system

MARQUETTE, MI--   Upper Peninsula Power Company is asking the Michigan Public Service Commission to let it read meters the way it usually does.

UPPCO currently reads customer meters on a bi-monthly basis. During the off months, the company estimates energy usage. It has filed a request with the MPSC seeking to extend the practice.

UPPCO Vice President of Business Development and Communications Brett French says there is no automated meter-reading system in place. He says considering the size of UPPCO’s service territory it would add about $914,000 to customers’ bills each year if technicians read all meters each month.

French says the waiver request is a routine filing UPPCO is required to make each year. He notes the company is developing a plan to eventually install “smart meter” technology.
