Study delineates MTU's economic impact in Michigan

HOUGHTON, MI--   An economic impact study released Tuesday says Michigan Tech created about 4,200 jobs and generated $448 million in spending in the state in 2016.

The study by Anderson Economic Group says the university delivers nearly a 10:1 rate of return on every dollar the state invests in it. The study also finds that each of Michigan’s 83 counties benefits financially from Tech. Houghton County accounts for almost 30 percent of the overall effect.

The report used data primarily drawn from the 2016 fiscal year to show how university operations, alumni earnings, and student spending inject hundreds of millions of dollars into the state’s economy. It was commissioned by Tech.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
