Students assist in planting the Porkies

ONTONAGON, MI--   Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is benefiting from a seed collection effort in Ontonagon County.

The Department of Natural Resources, the Ontonagon Area School agriculture class, and White Pine Electric volunteers recently gathered acorns and maple tree seeds. They’ll be used to grow seedlings at a nursery in the Ottawa National Forest that will be replanted in the Porkies.

Aside from giving kids the chance to experience forest conservation and regeneration, the project fulfilled at commitment from White Pine Electric Power to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
