'Spoofing' phone scam in Gladstone area

GLADSTONE, MI--   State Police from the Gladstone Post are cautioning residents about a “spoofing” scam.

A woman reported a call from someone who said a “student loan tax” warrant was out for her daughter’s arrest.  The caller then tried to obtain financial information from her to pay the so-called “bond.”  The caller ID on the phone indicated the call came from Michigan State Police Headquarters in Lansing.

Troopers say that number was “spoofed.”  That’s where the scammer can program the caller ID to appear as any number they want—not the one where the call actually originates.

The woman in this case was not defrauded any money.

State Police say they’ll never ask for money over the phone.  They note there’s no such thing as a student loan tax warrant.
