Soo man dies of injuries following assault

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   An assault in Sault Ste. Marie has turned into a murder investigation.

WWUP-TV reports police responded around 3 a.m. Wednesday to the 200 block of west 12th Avenue on a report a man had been assaulted. The victim, identified as Wesley Cook, 48, of the Soo, was taken to War Memorial Hospital, then transferred to a hospital in Ann Arbor. He died of his injuries around 10 a.m.

Jeremy Lehre, 18, has been arrested for open murder, and Aaron Lehre, 21, was arrested on an unrelated warrant. Both live in Sault Ste. Marie. They’re believed to be acquaintances of Cook.

Both are expected to be arraigned on open murder charges once all police reports have been filed with the Chippewa County Prosecutor’s Office.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
