LANSING, MI (AP)-- Republicans in the Michigan Senate plan to vote to repeal a state law requiring union-scale wages on public building projects.
The majority had waited to proceed with the prevailing wage legislation because labor unions helped support Proposal 1, the bipartisan road-funding plan that voters resoundingly defeated this week.
Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof said Thursday that a Senate committee will hold a hearing next week. The bills could see quick approval both in committee and on the floor.
Republican Gov. Rick Snyder opposes the bills. So do Democrats who say workers should be paid well.
But Meekhof says taxpayers should not have to pay more for public projects than can be paid for private projects.
