Riutta sentenced for hit-and-run

HOUGHTON, MI--   An Atlantic Mine man has been sentenced for a March hit-and-run accident in Adams Township.  

Benjamin Riutta, 33, was accused of hitting a 36-year-old Atlantic Mine woman as she walked along Obenhoff Road, then leaving the scene.  He was originally charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident, resulting in serious impairment or death, but pleaded to a misdemeanor charge of failure to stop at a personal injury accident.

Riutta was sentenced to one year in the Houghton County Jail.  He must also pay fines and costs.   

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
