Problems encountered at Mackinac Bridge Walk

ST. IGNACE, MI--   Major traffic backups were averted during this year’s Mackinac Bridge Walk, but the Labor Day event wasn’t without problems.

That’s according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority, which says many people weren’t able to participate because they couldn’t be on the starting line by 10:30 a.m.

Officials say in order to reopen the bridge at noon people needed to be on a shuttle bus by 10 a.m. Last year the MBA had 88 buses that made 45-minute trips to transport passengers from Mackinaw City to the St. Ignace start. This year, 127 buses made 20-minute trips, but with a firm scheduled end to the walk, not everyone who wanted to participate could make it to the starting line in time.

MBA Executive Secretary Bob Sweeney says making sure that type of situation doesn’t happen again will be a priority next year.
