Peters to tour Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad

freep.com

ESCANABA, MI--   U.S. Senator Gary Peters is in the U.P. to do some work and watch some dogs run.

Friday morning Peters will tour Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad and talk about his efforts to support short line railroads.  He’s cosponsored the Short Line Railroad and Rehabilitation and Investment Act of 2015, which seeks to refurbish old railroad cars and promote reinvestment in the lines.

Michigan is home to more than 21 short line railroads, which often connect small or rural communities with national rail freight networks.  Rail officials say it’s one of the most cost-effective ways to move raw materials and goods.

Peters is also slated to attend the UP200 Sled Dog Race, which starts at 7 p.m. Friday in downtown Marquette. For more information about the races go to up200.org.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
