U.P. organizations receive grants to test inland lake water

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has dispersed water quality monitoring grants to several entities around the state.

The money will be used to test the water quality of 183 inland lake beaches. Many recipients will use a new, rapid testing method that counts the DNA of E. coli bacteria in a water sample.

In the Upper Peninsula, Lake Superior State University is getting $7,883 to monitor three beaches; the Luce-Mackinac-Alger-Schoolcraft District Health Department will receive $5,200 to monitor two beaches; and the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department is getting $11,200 to monitor six beaches.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
