LANSING, MI (AP)-- Michigan has launched a new website to educate athletes, parents and coaches about the symptoms and consequences of sports concussions.
The website features resources and training courses from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's "Head's Up" program.
Under a new Michigan law, all sports coaches or volunteers are required to participate in a concussion awareness training program. Athletes suspected of having a concussion must be immediately removed from games and cannot return until they receive clearance from a health professional.
That law goes into full effect June 30.
Concussions are brain injuries that can result from a blow to the head during sports or recreational activities. The CDC says emergency departments treat more than 170,000 sports-related concussions in children and adolescents every year.
