HOUGHTON, MI-- A group of researchers at Michigan Tech has figured out how to travel through history.
A digital map-based project called Keweenaw Time Traveler allows users to explore how the region and its population have changed throughout the years.
Researchers have been digitally recreating the environmental stages of the Copper Country using Geographic Information Science technology. Each stage is comprised of many time periods or “scenes”—recreated from more than 1,000 historical maps from 1850 to 1950. Users can search records by name, address, place, and building type by year.
Tech is hosting a launch party for the Keweenaw Time Traveler Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Carnegie Museum in downtown Houghton.
