Mine truck involved in accident on CR 550

WLUC-TV

UPDATE--  Troopers from the Negaunee Post identify the driver of the MJ VanDamme Trucking vehicle as Shawn Mocker, 30, of Marquette.  Mocker stated the accident happened when he swerved to avoid a deer between Wetmore Landing and Harlow Lake.  Troopers cited him for going too fast for conditions.

Two tow trucks and a front-end loader worked for hours to clear CR 550.  The trailers had to be separated before they were moved, which caused road closures and long traffic delays.  Troopers say only a small amount of ore spilled.  The road was fully cleared and opened to traffic around noon Sunday.

MARQUETTE, MI--    Crews are working to remove an overturned Eagle mine truck and trailer on County Road 550.

The truck hauling copper and nickel ore was heading to the Humboldt Mill from the mine Saturday around 4 a.m. when it left the roadway and fell on its side about five miles north of the Marquette City limits.  Some of its load spilled, but officials say no fuel or oil leaked.

Workers were able to disconnect one of the trailers and haul it back to the mine.  They continue to work on removing the truck and another trailer.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.  The driver was taken to U.P. Health System Marquette as a precaution.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
