Meth lab found in Escanaba

ESCANABA, MI--    Four people are in custody, after Escanaba Public Safety Officers discovered a meth lab in an apartment building Wednesday.

Officers were called to the 1700 block of 3rd Avenue North on a report of an unusual odor coming from one of the apartments.  When they spoke to an occupant of the residence they also smelled a strong chemical odor.

Officers evacuated two men and two women from the apartment after they heard a “purge” sound and saw what appeared to be an active meth lab.  They evacuated the rest of the building and closed 3rd Avenue North to North 19th Street.

The Michigan State Police UPSET Meth Unit was called in to dismantle the lab.

The apartment’s four occupants were decontaminated, then lodged in the Delta County Jail on charges related to the manufacture of meth.  Four officers also had to be decontaminated.  No injuries were reported.

Public Safety was assisted by State Police from the Gladstone Post, the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, and the Escanaba Department of Public Works.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
