Marquette County woman dies after shooting herself in the leg

REPUBLIC TOWNSHIP, MI--   Police are investigating an accidental shooting that claimed the life of a Republic Township woman.

Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post were called Friday around 3:50 p.m. to the home of Athena Engle, 67, who reported she’d accidentally shot herself in her left leg with a .38 caliber handgun.

She was alone at the time of the incident.

Engle was taken to U.P. Health System Marquette for treatment, where she died the next day.

An autopsy is scheduled Monday morning.

Troopers say there was no sign of foul play.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
