Marquette Branch Prison gets first female warden

MARQUETTE, MI--   A woman has been named warden the Marquette Branch Prison—a first in the facility’s 128-year history.

Erica Huss becomes Marquette’s 21st warden following a 23-year career with the Michigan Department of Corrections. She replaces former warden Robert Napel, who was promoted to assistant deputy director for the Correctional Facilities Administration of the MDOC.

Huss began her career as a corrections officer at Camp Cusino in 1994. She moved on to roles as resident unit manager, assistant deputy warden and deputy warden at the Ojibway and Ionia correctional facilities and Marquette Branch Prison. She most recently served as deputy warden at Marquette.

Her appointment as warden was effective December 31, 2017.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
