Man drowns in Onota Township

ALGER COUNTY, MI--   An Ohio man has drowned in Lake Superior in Alger County’s Onota Township.

Wednesday the Alger County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched around 3 p.m. to Whitefish Point Road. Deputies say Dennis Kamento, 73, was swimming at the beach off of Whitefish Point Road when he was pulled in by an undertow. Despite the efforts of family and neighbors to save him, Kamento drowned.

The U.S. Coast Guard located his body approximately 50 yards off shore and lifted it into a helicopter. Kamento was taken to UPHS Marquette but pronounced dead en route.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office is reminding all beach goers to be careful when swimming in Lake Superior when wind and wave conditions are strong.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
