Man charged in Houghton domestic violence incident

HOUGHTON, MI--   A domestic violence victim found safety in a Houghton auto parts store Tuesday 

morning.

Houghton Police say around 8:15 a 34-year-old woman who was bleeding from a cut above her eye tried to enter Auto Zone on Memorial Drive.  A man followed the woman and tried to enter the store.  He was stopped at the door by an employee, who locked it, but not before the suspect threw a punch at him. 

Police arrested 37-year-old Jeffery Perala of Painesdale and charged him with aggravated assault and assault and battery. 

A preliminary hearing is set for April 27.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
