HESSEL, MI (AP)--   A 51-year-old man armed with a handgun has been shot to death during a confrontation with police in the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

The Mackinac County Sheriff's Office says that a deputy and two state troopers were responding to a report Tuesday night of a suicidal person at a home in Hessel when they encountered Dean Bruning at the front door.

Bruning was shot by one of the troopers and pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting is under investigation and will be forwarded to the Mackinac County prosecutor's office for review when it is completed.

The trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.

Hessel is northeast of St. Ignace.
