M-94 bridge reopens

SKANDIA, MI--   A Marquette County bridge washed out in a flood last fall is reopen Wednesday.

M-94 was closed October 18 after the east branch of the Chocolay River near Skandia flooded and washed out a large section of the roadway. The $1.8 million repair project included replacing failed culverts with a 129-foot concrete single-span bridge. With appropriate maintenance the lifespan of the new structure is expected to be 75 years. Other work included reshaping and stabilizing the stream bed beneath the bridge.

Construction on the bridge project began March 6 and was scheduled to be completed by July 14. Officials say an early spring and efficient work by contractors got the job done sooner than expected—and on budget—despite challenging weather.
