High-speed crash in Calumet Township injures one

CALUMET TOWNSHIP, MI--   Charges are pending against a Houghton driver who led police on a high-speed chase and crashed into a truck Thursday.

Around 2:25 p.m. State Police from the Calumet Post received several 911 calls reporting a white car driving over 80 miles per hour and running cars off of M-26 near Green Acres Road.  Several other 911 calls reported the car speeding through Houghton and Hancock.

Around 2:40 p.m. troopers heading southbound spotted the car on US-41 near the post and clocked it going more than 90 miles per hour.  Before troopers could catch up to the car it crashed into a pickup truck near Agent Street in Calumet Township.  The car rolled over and landed on its roof on the sidewalk.

The 27-year-old male suspect exited the car under his own power and was taken to Aspirus Hospital in Laurium.  He was later transferred to U.P. Health System Marquette for further evaluation.  The 41-year-old truck driver from Calumet was not seriously injured.

Troopers are seeking charges against the Houghton suspect.
