Gwinn woman reportedly steals car, crashes it in cemetery

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Gwinn woman is lodged in the Marquette County Jail after she led police on a chase in a stolen vehicle. 

Friday around 4:30 p.m. troopers from the Negaunee Post stopped a 2003 Jeep for suspected drunken driving on McClellan Avenue and US-41.  When troopers approached the vehicle on foot the driver sped off northbound on McClellan.  A pursuit culminated in the Jeep crashing into Holy Cross Cemetery.  Several grave markers and fencing were damaged, but no injuries were reported. 

The 20-year-old driver was taken into custody for operating while intoxicated, unlawful driving away of an automobile, fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing, and driving on a suspended license. 

Her name has not been released, pending arraignment. 

Marquette City Police and NMU Public Safety assisted in the incident.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
