Gwinn Schools taking steps to stabilize district

GWINN, MI--   The Gwinn Area Community Schools District has hired a business manager and says it’s moving forward with its plan to stabilize its finances.

Amy Finkbeiner and a support team have been reorganizing the business office to deal with a $406,000 deficit from last school year.

The school board will approve a revised budget for this year at its January 15 meeting. Officials say budget cuts made this year have balanced the 2017-2018 budget. They say it’s the first step in a three-step plan for a financially stable district. The other steps include developing a deficit elimination plan and building a long-term positive fund balance.

In other district news, Brad Pfluger has been named principal of Gwinn Middle/High School starting January 29. He replaces Sandra Petrovich, who was named superintendent on December 5. Former superintendent Tom Jayne retires February 15.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
