Gogebic County deputy uninjured after getting struck by car

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP, MI--   A 35-year-old Ironwood man is in custody after his vehicle struck a Gogebic County Sheriff’s deputy Friday night.

The deputy was directing traffic at an accident scene at Vanderhagen Road near Sunset in Ironwood Township around 9:30 p.m. The suspect vehicle was trying to drive through the accident scene and around a wrecker when it struck the deputy on his side and spun him around. The deputy was able to get in his patrol vehicle and briefly pursue the suspect before the suspect stopped a short distance from the scene. The suspect was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated, fleeing and eluding, failure to yield to a stationary emergency vehicle, and failure to submit to a preliminary breath test.

The deputy said he wasn’t injured, but was checked out at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital as a precaution.

Both wreckers and the Gogebic County patrol car had their emergency lights activated and the deputy was wearing a reflective vest.
