Gladstone man arrested for setting fire in, vandalizing church

ESCANABA, MI--   The Escanaba Department of Public Safety is investigating a fire and vandalism at a city church.

Officers were called Monday to the Harbor Lights Church of God on 2nd Avenue South and found the interior filled with smoke. They determined a fire that was extinguished by a citizen in the kitchen had been intentionally set. Officers also found the church walls had been spray-painted, paint was thrown on floors, and personal items within the church were also painted.

A 19-year-old Gladstone man was questioned about his involvement with putting out the fire. Further investigation led to his arrest for breaking and entering, malicious damage of property, and arson. He was lodged in the Delta County Jail pending arraignment.

Police are trying to determine if additional individuals were involved.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
