Flint: No immediate plan to raise chlorine in water supply

FLINT, MI (AP)--   Flint officials say they're in no hurry to boost chlorine in the city's water supply.

Utilities chief JoLisaMcDay told reporters Tuesday that it could sit and eat away at protective coatings in the vast pipe system.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last week told Flint and the state of Michigan that more chlorine is necessary during warm weather. The government also wants Flint to add caustic soda.

Flint's water system still is healing from using corrosive water from the Flint River for 18 months, which leached lead from old pipes and fixtures.

McDay and Mayor Karen Weaver say a temporary chemical feed system should be ready by Friday but they don't want to use it immediately. They want to consult with state and federal regulators.
