LANSING, MI (AP)-- Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer is criticizing Republican Governor Rick Snyder for being unable to persuade lawmakers to permanently raise more money to improve roads.
But it's unclear how Schauer would generate at least $1.2 billion more a year that Snyder says is needed to avoid drastic deterioration of roads and bridges.
The lack of a road-funding fix is an issue in the governor's race. Snyder's call for higher gasoline and vehicle registration taxes has stalled.
Schauer says he'd look for savings in state departments to redirect to the transportation budget and ask companies to pay increased fees on overweight and oversized trucks.
Yet it's unlikely those moves alone would generate enough money. Schauer isn't entirely ruling out a future gas tax hike if it's "fair."
