Fire traps residents in Escanaba apartment building

ESCANABA, MI--   A woman and child had to be rescued from a burning apartment building in Escanaba early Tuesday morning.

Escanaba Public Safety was called around 3:45 a.m. to 1431 Sheridan Road on a report that the building was filled with heavy smoke. Officers learned a woman and her child were trapped in their apartment because of smoke and possible fire in the hallway.

An officer used a fire extinguisher to knock down flames in a second-story common area, giving other officers time to evacuate two adults, one child, and several animals from the apartments. Officers were then able to extinguish the fire in the commons area and ventilate the building.

Officials say the fire started in a kitchen area when a stove was left on and ignited the room’s contents.

The building sustained fire, water, smoke, and structural damage to windows and doors from forced entry when officers tried to locate additional trapped residents.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
