Evans sentenced for embezzlement

ESCANABA, MI (AP)--   The former mayor of Escanaba has been sentenced to one year in jail for embezzling more than $100,000 from the local Eagles Club.

Leo Evans was also sentenced Thursday to five years of probation and ordered to pay more than $100,000 in restitution.  Delta County Judge Stephen Davis says Evans didn't meet the requirements to be sent to prison.

Evans resigned from the Escanaba City Council in April.  He sometimes served as mayor during his 18 years on the council.

Day-to-day decisions in Escanaba are made by a city manager.

The Eagles Club is a fraternal organization that raises money for other groups and community projects in the area.
