L'ANSE, MI-- The Environmental Protection Agency and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality heard from L’Anse residents who are concerned about living near the L’Anse Warden power plant.
The biomass electric-generation plant is in violation of air emissions standards for releasing 5.1 pounds of hydrogen chloride per hour, according to ABC 10. It’s required to stay below 2.17 pounds per hour.
At a meeting Monday in L’Anse residents who live near the plant said they also deal with immense amounts of dust fallout. Some dust samples were found to contain pentachlorophenol—or PCP—a compound in railroad ties that has been used as a pesticide and disinfectant.
The EPA and DEQ say they’re working on a compliance plan with the plant. Further testing has been ordered to determine if its emissions pose a health risk.
