Downstate man survives after boat containing four capsizes

DELTA COUNTY, MI--   A downstate man is lucky to be alive, after a boat he was in overturned in Delta County’s Ogontz Bay, near Nahma.

State Police from the Gladstone Post responded Friday around 10:35 a.m. to a report that four men were on board the vessel when it overturned in rough waters.  Three of the men made it to shore, while the fourth—Kenneth Arthur, 51, of Allegan—clung to the boat.  The three called for help and eventually lost sight of Arthur.

When troopers arrived on scene they saw an individual exiting the water onto shore about a half-mile away.  Police confirmed it was Arthur.

He was taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital for treatment due to exposure.

A helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Traverse City was en route when Arthur was found.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
