Door County observation tower closes

FISH CREEK, WI (AP)--   Wisconsin officials say they are closing a 75-foot observation tower at Peninsula State Park in Door County due to safety concerns.

The Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday that an inspection report recommended closing Eagle Tower at Peninsula State Park due to structural concerns. The agency says the tower is 225 feet above water and provides views of Green Bay and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The tower was built in 1914 as a forest fire observation platform and was rebuilt by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Its latest refurbishment was in the mid-1990s.

The agency says the tower's future will be determined after more inspections.
