Dog killed by wolves in Cooks

Caleb Beckman

INWOOD TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Schoolcraft County family says wolves have killed one of their hunting dogs.

The incident happened Monday night during a hunting training session in Cooks.  Officials say 12-year-old Ronnie Beckman and his father were training “Scout” in the woods around midnight when they heard him bark, then stop.

They found the dog’s body about 20 minutes later.  Caleb Beckman says there’s wasn’t much left of the dog.  He says after this, he’d like to see wolf hunting season extended to year-round.

Beckman says the DNR has confirmed wolves are to blame for the dog’s death.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
