Doctor delivers baby in rare birth on Mackinac Island

MLive.com

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI (AP)--   A rare birth has taken place on Mackinac Island after the mother was unable to make it to the mainland before her water broke.

Dr. Lisa VanHevel delivered a baby boy Wednesday morning at the Mackinac Island Medical Center. It was only her second time delivering a baby since she started practicing medicine on the island in August 2014.

VanHevel tells the Grand Rapids Press that pregnant women who live on Mackinac Island usually relocate temporarily to the mainland when they're nearing their due date.

But the baby's mother, Shelbie Mosley, wasn't expecting to give birth six weeks early and there was no way for her to leave the island once she was in active labor.

The baby, Jase, is the third generation in his family to be born on Mackinac Island.
