Dickinson County to test 911 texting

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI (AP)--   An Upper Peninsula county wants its residents to be able to send text messages to 911.

The Dickinson County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution Monday to move forward with a text-to-911 plan.

Dickinson County Sheriff Scott Celello says it's better talk to a dispatcher, but he says texting might be safer in instances when callers risk their safety if they're heard calling 911. Dispatchers would be able to text back.

The county's emergency coordinator said testing the system will take several months and it's not currently available.

Oakland County is preparing its own text-to-911 system, the Detroit Free Press reports, and Lapeer and Lake counties offer the service.
