Detroit gets the lights blazing

DETROIT, MI (AP)--   Detroit has finished installing new LED street lights on neighborhood streets in three ZIP codes as part of a project to illuminate the city.

The city's Public Lighting Authority says more than 14,000 lights have been installed Thursday. That's more than 3,000 lights ahead of its installation schedule.

The authority says it has taken over responsibility for maintaining the lights it has installed. It aims to fix any broken light within five days of it being reported.

Lights with underground wiring have also been installed in two pilot areas on major thoroughfares, collector streets and remaining residential streets.

About 65,000 lights are expected to go up by the end of 2016. The new lights are twice as bright and use much less electricity than the older 75-watt, high-pressure sodium lights.
