Details released in prisoner killing

MUNISING, MI--   Officials have not yet released the name of the suspect accused of killing an inmate at the Alger Correctional Facility Thursday.

A spokesman with the Department of Corrections says Rodriguez Montez Burks, 23, was found dead in his cell around 2 p.m. It’s not known how Burks was killed, but officials are treating it as a homicide. They say he died at the hands of his cellmate.

The suspect is being held in isolation until his arraignment.

Burks was serving time for third-degree fleeing and eluding a police officer and receiving and concealing stolen property from a motor vehicle. The offenses happened in Livingston County.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
