Delta County prosecutor cautions against rumor in Rapid River case

ESCANABA, MI--   The Delta County Prosecutor’s Office continues to evaluate a case in which a 3-year-old Rapid River girl was found in a ditch by a dog, but is cautioning the public not to speculate or reach unreliable conclusions about the situation.

The girl was found Friday morning. Investigation revealed unsafe and unsanitary living conditions at her home, and she and her young sister were removed from the residence.

Prosecutor Philip Strom released a statement Wednesday saying the public and media have expressed a great deal of interest and concern about the case. He says the girls are now in an appropriate and nurturing environment. Strom says no further details can yet be released. He notes all parties are entitled to due process and are presumed innocent until a final court decision is made.

Strom says his office is grateful for all helpful citizens--canines included—and witnesses who have aided in the investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
