Charge against Tech student accused of making online threat

HOUGHTON, MI--    A disturbing the peace charge has been dismissed against a Michigan Tech student accused of posting a racial threat on social media in November.

Houghton County Prosecutor Michael Makinen requested the charge be dismissed without prejudice against Matthew Schultz, 21, of Norway.

The Yik Yak post attributed to Schultz threatened to shoot black people on campus.

Many at Tech felt the charge was too light and requested a more stringent punishment.  Makinen said while authorities take the situation very seriously, Schultz’ alleged action did not merit a terrorism charge.  He said the case remains under investigation and Schultz may be recharged if further evidence of wrongdoing is discovered.
