Boy caught in Houghton basement collapse dies

HOUGHTON, MI--   A 12-year-old Houghton boy injured after flood water pushed in the basement walls of his house has died.

Thatcher Markham was trapped early Sunday morning after the walls collapsed on top of him. His father dug him out and performed CPR. A boat had to be used to take Thatcher from his house to the Hancock boat landing, then to an ambulance.

He was later airlifted from UPHS-Portage to Motts Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor. Officials say the boy passed away Monday night.

This is the only fatality reported during Houghton County’s massive flooding.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
