Body of missing fisherman found in Chippewa County

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI--   The body of an angler missing since November has been found in a Chippewa County lake.

Undersheriff Mike Bitnar says William Wenzel of Merrill, Michigan was reported missing November 27 of 2015 after he went out on a boat on Lake George.  There were high winds and large waves that day, and officials believe he fell overboard.  The boat was recovered but there was no sign of Wenzel.  The Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Coast Guard, and Michigan State Police dive team searched the waters for several days.

Thursday around 12:20 p.m. family and friends were searching the Lake George shoreline when they found something floating in the shallow waters near Rock Island.  Sheriff’s deputies launched a boat and recovered the body, which was identified by a brother as William Wenzel.

Officials say it appears the incident was an accidental drowning, and the investigation is now closed.
