ASNMU president arrested for stealing from student government

MARQUETTE, MI--   The former student president at Northern Michigan University has been charged with embezzlement.

Campus police and Marquette County Prosecutors say Amber Lopota stole from the student government, known as ASNMU.  The charge is embezzlement by an agent of $1,000 or more but less than $20,000.  It’s punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Lopota waived a preliminary examination Thursday in district court.

University spokeswoman Cindy Paavola says Lopota was arrested in March and withdrew from the university last week.

A new president of the Associated Students of Northern Michigan University was elected this week and will take office on Tuesday.

Lopota is scheduled to be arraigned in circuit court on May 9.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
