Another week, another scam

CALUMET, MI--   Michigan State Police want residents to be aware of a lottery scam circulating in the Copper Country.

Troopers from the Calumet Post say it involves a letter and a fake check being sent in the mail to the victim, who is told they’ve won a large amount of money.  The victim is instructed to contact a claims manager at the number provided and cash the check to cover taxes, insurance, handling, and shipping fees.  Once the victim calls the number the scammer will ask for bank account numbers, credit card information, and other personal information.  The victim will often be asked to send money to cover certain costs.

Troopers say this type of scam is common and comes in different forms.  They say residents should never provide financial or personal information to unknown solicitors.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
